A straight razor shave only works well if your skin and beard are ready for it. We see the same two problems over and over at Timberlodge Parlor. People show up having shaved that same morning, thinking they are saving us time. Or they leave the chair and go straight back into a day that undoes the shave before it even settles. Neither one is your fault, nobody tells you this stuff ahead of time. So here it is.
The Prep Mistake We See Most
Shaving or trimming your own beard before the visit is the biggest prep mistake we see, and it happens every week. It sounds helpful, but it works against the process. A razor shave is built around reading your beard as it actually grows in, the direction, the length, the rough patches. When you trim it down yourself the day before, you take away the information the razor needs to work with the grain instead of against it, and you also strip away some of the natural oil and protection your skin had going into the appointment.
The fix is simple. Let your beard be whatever it is when you sit down. Two or three days of growth, a week, it does not matter, because the razor can read any of it. Come as you are and let the shave do the work it is meant to do.
Day Before and Day Of
You do not need a special routine before a straight razor shave, but a few things help. Wash your face the morning of your appointment with something gentle, nothing harsh or exfoliating, because a raw or irritated surface makes the blade drag instead of glide. Skip any new products, aftershaves, or creams you have not used before, since a reaction showing up right as we go over your skin with a blade is the last thing either of us wants. If your skin tends to get irritated or you have a rash or sunburn going, it is worth mentioning it when you sit down. We would rather know and adjust the pressure and the products than guess and find out halfway through.
If your beard has gotten long enough that you are worried it needs shaping first, that is a different appointment, not a reason to shave it down yourself. We offer beard trims on their own, so you can get a cleanup now and still let it grow back out for a future straight razor shave.
Aftercare for the Two Days After
Touching your freshly shaved face with unwashed hands, or exposing it to heavy sweat and dirt, is a bad idea right after the shave. Freshly shaved skin is more open than you think. A blade has just passed over the top layer, so whatever touches it next gets a more direct path in than it would on skin that still has a few days of stubble as a buffer.
Wash your hands before you touch your face for the rest of the day, since that is the simplest way to keep bacteria off skin that has less natural defense than usual. If you are heading to the gym, the beach, or straight into yard work, plan for a shower afterward rather than letting sweat and grime sit on your skin, because salt, chlorine, and dirt all sting and slow down healing on freshly shaved skin. If a shower is not possible right away, at least rinse your face with clean water and pat it dry instead of rubbing. For the next two days, keep the moisturizing simple, nothing with heavy fragrance or alcohol, since both can sting and dry out skin that is still settling, and give your skin a chance to calm down before you go back to your normal grooming routine.
